Spark Machining  

Spark machining, also known as EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining), is a machining method used to shape metal through electrical discharges. This method is mainly used to machine hard materials or materials that are difficult to machine using methods such as milling and turning methods.  

How does Spark Machining Work  

Spark machining works by generating an electric spark between an electrode and the workpiece. The workpiece and electrode are immersed in a dielectric fluid, usually oil or deionized water. The electric spark creates an intense heat that melts and vaporizes material from the workpiece. By repeating this process thousands of times per second, complex and accurate shapes can be created with high precision.  

Wire EDM (Electric discharge molding)

Advantages and Limitations  

Spark machining offers several advantages. One of the most prominent is the high precision. They make it possible to produce detailed and complex shapes with very tight tolerances. The technique is particularly useful for machining hard materials that are difficult or impossible to machine using traditional methods. As there is no physical contact between the tool and the workpiece, mechanical stresses and deformations are avoided, maintaining the integrity of the workpiece. In addition, EDM is very versatile and can be used to machine both simple and complex geometries.  

  

Despite these advantages, EDM has some limitations. The process is generally slower than other machining methods. Due to the equipment and specific requirements for electrodes and dielectric fluid, costs can be higher.
